More vehicle fires in rear end accidents. I’ve seen 3 this week. Notable is that all of them were turbocharged cars. Today was a 13-15 Malibu LTZ.

Kinja'd!!!

Yesterday was a WRX and Monday was a Veloster turbo.

So what gives?

I’m guessing a crash hard enough to fracture a high pressure fuel line causes atomized fuel to spray all through the engine bay. The very hot turbocharger ignites it and “whoof.”

Ford is bringing back the Pinto! That’s why we’re not getting the Fiesta anymore :p

Every car is a Ferrari now!

Alternatively, the oil line dumps onto the exhaust and things light up from there. Not sure how flammable the fancy new synthetic oils are, though.

So what gives?

confirmation bias and mistaking correlation for causation. turbos are practically standard equipment these days. unless you know the actual source of the fires you can’t really draw any conclusions from your observations.

My statement was merely a hypothesis. I would have to analyze a bunch of crash data to determine the prevalence of engine bay fires in rear-end crashes. Perhaps the crashes I’ve seen this week are outliers. Perhaps they fall right in line with the chance of engine fire in a crash, but circumstances put them in a place where I could observe them.
